O blemishless, if [you] shine without another in the heart as that space [of pure awareness], who am I who come outside as if another? May you come outside, Arunachala, placing [your] fully blossomed [expansive or all-pervading] lotus-feet on his head [namely on the head of this ego, the spurious ‘I’ who has come out as if other than you].

English translation: I have seen a wonder, [this] magnetic hill that forcibly seizes the soul. Subduing the mischievous [outward-going mental] activity of the soul who thinks of it once, pulling [that soul] to be facing towards itself, the one [reality that shines in the heart as sat-cit, pure being-awareness, ‘I am’], [thereby] making it be acala [motionless] like itself, it will take [and consume] that sweet [spiritually ripened and pure] soul as bali [food offered in sacrifice or as alms]. What [a wonder] this is! Souls, be saved [by] thinking of the great Aruna Hill, this killer of the soul, who shines in the heart [as the heart, namely sat-cit, pure being-awareness, ‘I am’].

English translation: When investigating within the mind who the seer is, I saw what remained when the seer was [thereby found to be] completely non-existent. The mind did not rise to say ‘I saw’, [so] in what way could the mind rise to say ‘I did not see’? Who has the power to elucidate this [by] speaking, when in ancient times [even] you [as Dakshinamurti] elucidated [it] without speaking? Only to elucidate your nature [or state, namely pure, silent and motionless being-awareness] without speaking, you stood shining as a hill [or motionlessly] [between] sky and earth.

English translation: Water showered by clouds, which rise from the ocean, will not stop [even] if obstructed until it reaches [its] ocean-abode. [Likewise] the embodied soul, which rises from you, will not stop even though it wanders on many paths that it encounters until it reaches you. Though it wanders in the vast sky, for a bird there is no place to stay [or rest] [there]; except the ground, there is no place [for it to stay or rest]; what it must do is to go the way it came. [Likewise] Aruna-mountain, when the soul goes back the way it came, it will rejoin [or merge back in] you, the [infinite] ocean of happiness.

English translation: Red Hill [Arunachala], all this [the entire world-appearance], which is a [mental] picture, arises, stands and subsides [along with ego, the knower of it all] only in you. Since you dance eternally in the heart as ‘I’, they [namely sages and sacred texts] say your name itself is ‘heart’.

Śrī Aruṇācala Pañcaratnam (Tamil) verse 3:

அகமுகமா ரந்த வமலமதி தன்னா

English translation: By that immaculate mind that is completely ahamukham [inward facing, selfward-facing or self-attentive] investigating where this ‘I’ itself rises and [thereby] clearly knowing the form [or real nature] of ‘I’, one will certainly cease in you, Arunachala, like a river in the ocean. Investigate [or know].

English translation: Aruṇācalaramaṇa is paramātman [the supreme spirit or ultimate self of all] rejoicing as awareness in the cave of the heart-lotus of [all] different jīvas [souls or sentient beings] beginning with Hari [Viṣṇu]. Heart melting with love, reaching [or merging in] the cave where [this] sublime supreme dwells, the eye that is awareness opening, you will [thereby] know what is innate [or one’s own, namely your own real nature, the indwelling Aruṇācalaramaṇa]; [because] it will be exposed [opened, disclosed or made clear] [meaning it will shine forth, devouring ego and everything else in the infinite clarity of pure awareness].

      vaṟivadaṟ koṉḏṟilai yundīpaṟa
.

பதச்சேதம்: அறிவு அறியாமையும் அற்ற அறிவே அறிவு ஆகும். உண்மை ஈது. அறிவதற்கு ஒன்று இலை.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): aṟivu aṟiyāmai-y-um aṯṟa aṟivē aṟivu āhum. uṇmai īdu. aṟivadaṟku oṉḏṟu ilai.

English translation: Only knowledge [in the sense of awareness] that is devoid of knowledge and ignorance [of anything other than oneself] is [actual] knowledge [or awareness]. This [alone] is [what is] real, [because in the clear view of oneself as pure awareness] there is not anything [other than oneself for one either] to know [or to not know].

Upadēśa Undiyār verse 28:

தனாதியல் யாதெனத் தான்றெரி கிற்பின்
னனாதி யனந்தசத் துந்தீபற
      வகண்ட சிதானந்த முந்தீபற.

taṉādiyal yādeṉat tāṉḏṟeri hiṟpiṉ
ṉaṉādi yaṉantasat tundīpaṟa
      vakhaṇḍa cidāṉanda mundīpaṟa
.

பதச்சேதம்: தனாது இயல் யாது என தான் தெரிகில், பின் அனாதி அனந்த சத்து அகண்ட சித் ஆனந்தம்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): taṉādu iyal yādu eṉa tāṉ terihil, piṉ aṉādi aṉanta sattu akhaṇḍa cit āṉandam.

English translation: If one knows what the [real] nature of oneself is, then [what will remain existing and shining is only the real nature of oneself (ātma-svarūpa), which is] anādi [beginningless], ananta [endless, limitless or infinite] and akhaṇḍa [unbroken, undivided or unfragmented] sat-cit-ānanda [being-awareness-happiness].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu (Forty Verses on What Is)

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu maṅgalam verse 1:

உள்ளதல துள்ளவுணர் வுள்ளதோ வுள்ளபொரு
ளுள்ளலற வுள்ளத்தே யுள்ளதா — லுள்ளமெனு
முள்ளபொரு ளுள்ளலெவ னுள்ளத்தே யுள்ளபடி
யுள்ளதே யுள்ள லுணர்.

uḷḷadala duḷḷavuṇar vuḷḷadō vuḷḷaporu
ḷuḷḷalaṟa vuḷḷattē yuḷḷadā — luḷḷameṉu
muḷḷaporu ḷuḷḷaleva ṉuḷḷattē yuḷḷapaḍi
yuḷḷadē yuḷḷa luṇar
.

பதச்சேதம்: உள்ளது அலது உள்ள உணர்வு உள்ளதோ? உள்ள பொருள் உள்ளல் அற உள்ளத்தே உள்ளதால், உள்ளம் எனும் உள்ள பொருள் உள்ளல் எவன்? உள்ளத்தே உள்ளபடி உள்ளதே உள்ளல். உணர்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uḷḷadu aladu uḷḷa-v-uṇarvu uḷḷadō? uḷḷa-poruḷ uḷḷal-aṟa uḷḷattē uḷḷadāl, uḷḷam eṉum uḷḷa-poruḷ uḷḷal evaṉ? uḷḷattē uḷḷapaḍi uḷḷadē uḷḷal. uṇar.

English translation: If what is were not, would being awareness be? Since the being substance is in the heart without thought, how to think of the being substance, which is called ‘heart’? Being in the heart as it is alone is thinking. Know.

Explanatory paraphrase: If uḷḷadu [what is] were not, would uḷḷa-v-uṇarvu [being awareness, real awareness or awareness that actually is] be? Since uḷḷa-poruḷ [the being substance or real substance] is in uḷḷam [the heart] without uḷḷal [thought or thinking], how to [or who can] think of [meditate on or investigate] uḷḷa-poruḷ, which is called ‘uḷḷam’ [the heart]? Being in the heart as it is [without rising as ego to think anything else] alone is thinking [of it] [remembering it, meditating on it, contemplating it, investigating it or revering it]. Know [or be aware] [of it as it is].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu maṅgalam verse 1 (Sanskrit version composed by Bhagavan):

सद्विना सद्ज्ञान मस्ति किमुसत्यम्
वृत्तिरहि तम्हृदिवि भात्यतः — तत्तृदयम्
ध्यायतिक थम्हृदित दात्मभा वस्थितिर्
ध्यानम्स द्वस्तुनस् स्यात् ॥

sadvinā sadjñāna masti kimusatyam
vṛttirahi tamhṛdivi bhātyataḥ — tattṛdayam
dhyāyatika thamhṛdita dātmabhā vasthitir
dhyānamsa dvastunas syāt
.

पदच्छेद: सत् विना सत् ज्ञानम् अस्ति किमु? सत्यम् वृत्ति रहितम् हृदि विभाति. अतस् तत् हृदयम् ध्यायति कथम्? हृदि तदात्म भाव स्थितिर् ध्यानम् सत् वस्तुनः. स्यात्.

Padacchēda (word-separation): sat vinā sat-jñānam asti kimu? satyam vṛtti rahitam hṛdi vibhāti. atas tat hṛdayam dhyāyati katham? hṛdi tadātma-bhāva sthitir dhyānam sat-vastunaḥ. syāt.

English translation: Without sat [being, existence or what is real], could sat-jñānam [being-awareness or awareness of being] be? Satyam [what is real] shines in the heart devoid of vṛtti [thought or mental activity, including the first thought, the ahaṁ-vṛtti, the ‘I’-thought or ego, the knower of all other thoughts]. Therefore how to meditate on it, the heart? Standing [staying, remaining, abiding or being] in the heart as it is [that is, as pure being-awareness, without rising as ‘I’ (ego) to know anything else] is dhyāna [meditation or contemplation] on sat-vastu [the real substance or essence, which is being]. May it be [that is, may such meditation be (thereby implying: may you be in the heart as it is)].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 4:

உருவந்தா னாயி னுலகுபர மற்றா
முருவந்தா னன்றே லுவற்றி — னுருவத்தைக்
கண்ணுறுதல் யாவனெவன் கண்ணலாற் காட்சியுண்டோ
கண்ணதுதா னந்தமிலாக் கண்.

uruvandā ṉāyi ṉulahupara maṯṟā

kaṇṇuṟudal yāvaṉevaṉ kaṇṇalāṯ kāṭciyuṇḍō
kaṇṇadutā ṉantamilāk kaṇ
.

பதச்சேதம்: உருவம் தான் ஆயின், உலகு பரம் அற்று ஆம்; உருவம் தான் அன்றேல், உவற்றின் உருவத்தை கண் உறுதல் யாவன்? எவன்? கண் அலால் காட்சி உண்டோ? கண் அது தான், அந்தம் இலா கண்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uruvam tāṉ āyiṉ, ulahu param aṯṟu ām; uruvam tāṉ aṉḏṟēl, uvaṯṟiṉ uruvattai kaṇ uṟudal yāvaṉ? evaṉ? kaṇ alāl kāṭci uṇḍō? kaṇ adu tāṉ, antam-ilā kaṇ.

English translation: If oneself is a form, the world and God will be likewise; if oneself is not a form, who can see their forms, and how [to do so]? Can what is seen be otherwise [or of a different nature] than the eye [the awareness that sees or perceives it]? The [real] eye is oneself [one’s real nature, which is pure awareness], the infinite [and hence formless] eye [so it can never see any forms or phenomena, which are all finite].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 5:

உடல்பஞ்ச கோச வுருவதனா லைந்து
முடலென்னுஞ் சொல்லி லொடுங்கு — முடலன்றி
யுண்டோ வுலக முடல்விட் டுலகத்தைக்
கண்டா ருளரோ கழறு.

uḍalpañca kōśa vuruvadaṉā laindu
muḍaleṉṉuñ colli loḍuṅgu — muḍalaṉḏṟi
yuṇḍō vulaha muḍalviṭ ṭulahattaik
kaṇḍā ruḷarō kaṙaṟu
.

பதச்சேதம்: உடல் பஞ்ச கோச உரு. அதனால், ஐந்தும் ‘உடல்’ என்னும் சொல்லில் ஒடுங்கும். உடல் அன்றி உண்டோ உலகம்? உடல் விட்டு, உலகத்தை கண்டார் உளரோ? கழறு.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uḍal pañca kōśa uru. adaṉāl, aindum ‘uḍal’ eṉṉum sollil oḍuṅgum. uḍal aṉḏṟi uṇḍō ulaham? uḍal viṭṭu, ulahattai kaṇḍār uḷarō? kaṙaṟu.

English translation: The body is pañca-kōśa-uru [a form composed of five sheaths, namely a physical structure, life, mind, intellect and will]. Therefore all five [sheaths] are included in the term ‘body’. Without a body [composed of these five sheaths], is there a world? Without [experiencing oneself as such] a body, is there anyone who has seen a world? Say.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 6:

உலகைம் புலன்க ளுருவேறன் றவ்வைம்
புலனைம் பொறிக்குப் புலனா — முலகைமன

pulaṉaim poṟikkup pulaṉā — mulahaimaṉa
moṉḏṟaim poṟivāyā lōrndiḍuda lāṉmaṉattai
yaṉḏṟiyula kuṇḍō vaṟai
.

பதச்சேதம்: உலகு ஐம் புலன்கள் உரு; வேறு அன்று. அவ் ஐம் புலன் ஐம் பொறிக்கு புலன் ஆம். உலகை மனம் ஒன்று ஐம் பொறிவாயால் ஓர்ந்திடுதலால், மனத்தை அன்றி உலகு உண்டோ? அறை.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ulahu aim pulaṉgaḷ uru; vēṟu aṉḏṟu. a-vv-aim pulaṉ aim poṟikku pulaṉ ām. ulahai maṉam oṉḏṟu aim poṟi-vāyāl ōrndiḍudalāl, maṉattai aṉḏṟi ulahu uṇḍō? aṟai.

English translation: The world is a form [composed] of five [kinds of] sense-impressions [sights, sounds, tastes, smells and tactile sensations], not anything else. Those five [kinds of] sense-impressions are impressions to [or for] the five sense organs. Since the mind alone [or since one thing, the mind] perceives the world by way of the five sense organs, is there [any] world besides [excluding, if not for, apart from, other than or without] the mind? Say.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 7:

உலகறிவு மொன்றா யுதித்தொடுங்கு மேனு
முலகறிவு தன்னா லொளிரு — முலகறிவு
தோன்றிமறை தற்கிடனாய்த் தோன்றிமறை யாதொளிரும்
பூன்றமா மஃதே பொருள்.

ulahaṟivu moṉḏṟā yudittoḍuṅgu mēṉu

tōṉḏṟimaṟai daṯkiḍaṉāyt tōṉḏṟimaṟai yādoḷirum
pūṉḏṟamā maḵdē poruḷ
.

பதச்சேதம்: உலகு அறிவும் ஒன்றாய் உதித்து ஒடுங்கும் ஏனும், உலகு அறிவு தன்னால் ஒளிரும். உலகு அறிவு தோன்றி மறைதற்கு இடன் ஆய் தோன்றி மறையாது ஒளிரும் பூன்றம் ஆம் அஃதே பொருள்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ulahu aṟivum oṉḏṟāy udittu oḍuṅgum ēṉum, ulahu aṟivu-taṉṉāl oḷirum. ulahu aṟivu tōṉḏṟi maṟaidaṯku iḍaṉ-āy tōṉḏṟi maṟaiyādu oḷirum pūṉḏṟam ām aḵdē poruḷ.

English translation: Though the world and awareness [the awareness that perceives the world, namely ego or mind] arise and subside simultaneously, the world shines by [that rising and subsiding] awareness [the mind]. Only that which shines without appearing or disappearing as the place [space, expanse, location, site or ground] for the appearing and disappearing of the world and [that] awareness is poruḷ [the real substance or vastu], which is pūṉḏṟam [the infinite whole or pūrṇa].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 13:

ஞானமாந் தானேமெய் நானாவா ஞானமஞ்
ஞானமாம் பொய்யாமஞ் ஞானமுமே — ஞானமாந்
தன்னையன்றி யின்றணிக டாம்பலவும் பொய்மெய்யாம்
பொன்னையன்றி யுண்டோ புகல்.

ñāṉamān tāṉēmey nāṉāvā ñāṉamañ

taṉṉaiyaṉḏṟi yiṉḏṟaṇiga ḍāmpalavum poymeyyām
poṉṉaiyaṉḏṟi yuṇḍō puhal
.

பதச்சேதம்: ஞானம் ஆம் தானே மெய். நானா ஆம் ஞானம் அஞ்ஞானம் ஆம். பொய் ஆம் அஞ்ஞானமுமே ஞானம் ஆம் தன்னை அன்றி இன்று. அணிகள் தாம் பலவும் பொய்; மெய் ஆம் பொன்னை அன்றி உண்டோ? புகல்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ñāṉam ām tāṉē mey. nāṉā ām ñāṉam aññāṉam ām. poy ām aññāṉamumē ñāṉam ām taṉṉai aṉḏṟi iṉḏṟu. aṇigaḷ tām palavum poy; mey ām poṉṉai aṉḏṟi uṇḍō? puhal.

English translation: Oneself, who is jñāna [knowledge or awareness], alone is real. Awareness that is manifold [namely the mind, whose root, ego, is the awareness that sees the one as many] is ajñāna [ignorance]. Even [that] ignorance, which is unreal, does not exist except as [besides, apart from or as other than] oneself, who is [real] awareness. All the many ornaments are unreal; do they exist except as gold, which is real? Say.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 14:

தன்மையுண்டேன் முன்னிலைப டர்க்கைக டாமுளவாந்
தன்மையி னுண்மையைத் தானாய்ந்து — தன்மையறின்
முன்னிலைப டர்க்கை முடிவுற்றொன் றாயொளிருந்
தன்மையே தன்னிலைமை தான்.

taṉmaiyuṇḍēṉ muṉṉilaipa ḍarkkaiga ḍāmuḷavān

muṉṉilaipa ḍarkkai muḍivuṯṟoṉ ḏṟāyoḷirun
taṉmaiyē taṉṉilaimai tāṉ
.

பதச்சேதம்: தன்மை உண்டேல், முன்னிலை படர்க்கைகள் தாம் உள ஆம். தன்மையின் உண்மையை தான் ஆய்ந்து தன்மை அறின், முன்னிலை படர்க்கை முடிவு உற்று, ஒன்றாய் ஒளிரும் தன்மையே தன் நிலைமை தான்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): taṉmai uṇḍēl, muṉṉilai paḍarkkaigaḷ tām uḷa-v-ām. taṉmaiyiṉ uṇmaiyai tāṉ āyndu taṉmai aṟiṉ, muṉṉilai paḍarkkai muḍivu uṯṟu, oṉḏṟāy oḷirum taṉmaiyē taṉ-nilaimai tāṉ.

English translation: If the first person [ego] exists, second and third persons [everything else] will exist. If the first person ceases to exist [by] oneself investigating the reality of the first person, second and third persons coming to an end, the taṉmai [selfness, essence or reality] that shines as one [undivided by the appearance of these three persons] alone is oneself, the nilaimai [enduring nature or reality] of oneself.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 22:

மதிக்கொளி தந்தம் மதிக்கு ளொளிரு
மதியினை யுள்ளே மடக்கிப் — பதியிற்
பதித்திடுத லன்றிப் பதியை மதியான்
மதித்திடுத லெங்ஙன் மதி.

matiyiṉai yuḷḷē maḍakkip — patiyiṯ
padittiḍuda laṉḏṟip patiyai matiyāṉ
madittiḍuda leṅṅaṉ madi
.

பதச்சேதம்: மதிக்கு ஒளி தந்து, அம் மதிக்குள் ஒளிரும் மதியினை உள்ளே மடக்கி பதியில் பதித்திடுதல் அன்றி, பதியை மதியால் மதித்திடுதல் எங்ஙன்? மதி.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): matikku oḷi tandu, a-m-matikkuḷ oḷirum matiyiṉai uḷḷē maḍakki patiyil padittiḍudal aṉḏṟi, patiyai matiyāl madittiḍudal eṅṅaṉ? madi.

English translation: Except by, turning mati [the mind or intellect] back within, [thereby] completely immersing it in pati [the Lord or God], who shines [as pure awareness] within that mind giving light [of awareness] to the mind, how to fathom [or investigate and know] God by the mind? Consider.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 23:

நானென்றித் தேக நவிலா துறக்கத்து
நானின்றென் றாரு நவில்வதிலை — நானொன்

ḏṟeṙundapi ṉellā meṙuminda nāṉeṅ
geṙumeṉḏṟu nuṇmatiyā leṇ
.

பதச்சேதம்: ‘நான்’ என்று இத் தேகம் நவிலாது. ‘உறக்கத்தும் நான் இன்று’ என்று ஆரும் நவில்வது இலை. ‘நான்’ ஒன்று எழுந்த பின், எல்லாம் எழும். இந்த ‘நான்’ எங்கு எழும் என்று நுண் மதியால் எண்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘nāṉ’ eṉḏṟu i-d-dēham navilādu. ‘uṟakkattum nāṉ iṉḏṟu’ eṉḏṟu ārum navilvadu ilai. ‘nāṉ’ oṉḏṟu eṙunda piṉ, ellām eṙum. inda ‘nāṉ’ eṅgu eṙum eṉḏṟu nuṇ matiyāl eṇ.

English translation: This body does not say ‘I’ [that is, it is not aware of itself as ‘I’]. No one says ‘In sleep I do not exist’ [even though one was then not aware of this or any other body]. [Therefore neither this nor any other body can be what I actually am, but in waking and dream an awareness rises as ‘I am this body’.] After one thing [called] ‘I’ [namely ego, the awareness that rises as ‘I am this body’] rises, everything rises. Contemplate [investigate, discern, determine or ascertain] by nuṇ mati [a subtle, refined, sharp, keen, acute, precise, meticulous and discerning mind or intellect] where this ‘I’ rises.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 24:

சடவுடனா னென்னாது சச்சித் துதியா

ciccaḍakki ranthibandhañ jīvaṉuṭpa meyyahandai
yiccamu sāramaṉa meṇ
.

பதச்சேதம்: சட உடல் ‘நான்’ என்னாது; சத்சித் உதியாது; உடல் அளவா ‘நான்’ ஒன்று உதிக்கும் இடையில். இது சித்சடக்கிரந்தி, பந்தம், சீவன், நுட்ப மெய், அகந்தை, இச் சமுசாரம், மனம்; எண்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): jaḍa uḍal ‘nāṉ’ eṉṉādu; sat-cit udiyādu; uḍal aḷavā ‘nāṉ’ oṉḏṟu udikkum iḍaiyil. idu cit-jaḍa-giranthi, bandham, jīvaṉ, nuṭpa mey, ahandai, i-c-samusāram, maṉam; eṇ.

English translation: The jaḍa [insentient] body does not say ‘I’; sat-cit [being-awareness] does not rise; [but] in between [these two] one thing [called] ‘I’ rises as the extent of the body. This [the spurious adjunct-conflated awareness that rises as ‘I am this body’] is cit-jaḍa-granthi [the knot (granthi) formed by the entanglement of awareness (cit) with an insentient (jaḍa) body, binding them together as if they were one], bandha [bondage], jīva [life or soul], nuṭpa mey [subtle body], ahandai [ego], this saṁsāra [wandering, revolving, perpetual movement, restless activity, worldly existence, embodied condition or the cycle of birth and death] and manas [mind]. Know.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 25:

muruppaṯṟi yuṇḍumiha vōṅgu — muruviṭ
ṭuruppaṯṟun tēḍiṉā lōṭṭam piḍikku
muruvaṯṟa pēyahandai yōr
.

பதச்சேதம்: உரு பற்றி உண்டாம்; உரு பற்றி நிற்கும்; உரு பற்றி உண்டு மிக ஓங்கும்; உரு விட்டு, உரு பற்றும்; தேடினால் ஓட்டம் பிடிக்கும். உரு அற்ற பேய் அகந்தை. ஓர்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uru paṯṟi uṇḍām; uru paṯṟi niṯkum; uru paṯṟi uṇḍu miha ōṅgum; uru viṭṭu, uru paṯṟum; tēḍiṉāl ōṭṭam piḍikkum. uru aṯṟa pēy ahandai. ōr.

English translation: Grasping form it comes into being; grasping form it stands; grasping and feeding on form it grows abundantly; leaving form, it grasps form. If seeking, it will take flight. [Such is the nature of this] formless demon ego. Investigate.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 26:

அகந்தையுண் டாயி னனைத்துமுண் டாகு

mahandaiyiṉ ḏṟēliṉ ḏṟaṉaittu — mahandaiyē
yāvumā mādalāl yādideṉḏṟu nāḍalē
yōvudal yāvumeṉa vōr
.

பதச்சேதம்: அகந்தை உண்டாயின், அனைத்தும் உண்டாகும்; அகந்தை இன்றேல், இன்று அனைத்தும். அகந்தையே யாவும் ஆம். ஆதலால், யாது இது என்று நாடலே ஓவுதல் யாவும் என ஓர்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ahandai uṇḍāyiṉ, aṉaittum uṇḍāhum; ahandai iṉḏṟēl, iṉḏṟu aṉaittum. ahandai-y-ē yāvum ām. ādalāl, yādu idu eṉḏṟu nāḍal-ē ōvudal yāvum eṉa ōr.

English translation: If ego comes into being, everything comes into being; if ego is not, everything is not. Ego itself is everything. Therefore, know that investigating what this [namely ego] is alone is giving up everything.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 27:

நானுதியா துள்ளநிலை நாமதுவா யுள்ளநிலை
நானுதிக்குந் தானமதை நாடாம — னானுதியாத்
தன்னிழப்பைச் சார்வதெவன் சாராமற் றானதுவாந்

taṉṉiṙappaic cārvadevaṉ sārāmaṯ ṟāṉaduvān
taṉṉilaiyi ṉiṯpadevaṉ sāṯṟu
.

பதச்சேதம்: ‘நான்’ உதியாது உள்ள நிலை நாம் அது ஆய் உள்ள நிலை. ‘நான்’ உதிக்கும் தானம் அதை நாடாமல், ‘நான்’ உதியா தன் இழப்பை சார்வது எவன்? சாராமல், தான் அது ஆம் தன் நிலையில் நிற்பது எவன்? சாற்று.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘nāṉ’ udiyādu uḷḷa nilai nām adu-v-āy uḷḷa nilai. ‘nāṉ’ udikkum thāṉam-adai nāḍāmal, ‘nāṉ’ udiyā taṉ-ṉ-iṙappai sārvadu evaṉ? sārāmal, tāṉ adu ām taṉ nilaiyil niṯpadu evaṉ? sāṯṟu.

English translation: The state in which ‘I’ is without rising [as ego] is the state in which we are as that [brahman]. Without investigating the place [namely one’s own being] where ‘I’ rises, how to reach the loss of oneself [the eradication or annihilation of ego], [the state] in which ‘I’ does not [ever] rise? [And] without reaching [the loss of ego], how to stand in one’s own [real] state, in which oneself is that? Say.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 28:

.

பதச்சேதம்: எழும்பும் அகந்தை எழும் இடத்தை, நீரில் விழுந்த பொருள் காண வேண்டி முழுகுதல் போல், கூர்ந்த மதியால் பேச்சு மூச்சு அடக்கிக் கொண்டு உள்ளே ஆழ்ந்து அறிய வேண்டும். அறி.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): eṙumbum ahandai eṙum iḍattai, nīril viṙunda poruḷ kāṇa vēṇḍi muṙuhudal pōl, kūrnda matiyāl pēccu mūccu aḍakki-k-koṇḍu uḷḷē āṙndu aṟiya vēṇḍum. aṟi.

English translation: Like sinking wanting to see something that has fallen in water, sinking within restraining speech and breath by kūrnda mati [a sharpened, pointed, keen, acute, penetrating and discerning mind or intellect] it is necessary to know the place where the rising ego rises. Know.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 29:

நானென்று வாயா னவிலாதுள் ளாழ்மனத்தா

பதச்சேதம்: ‘நான்’ என்று வாயால் நவிலாது, உள் ஆழ் மனத்தால் ‘நான்’ என்று எங்கு உந்தும் என நாடுதலே ஞான நெறி ஆம். அன்றி, ‘அன்று இது, நான் ஆம் அது’ என்று உன்னல் துணை ஆம்; அது விசாரம் ஆமா?

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘nāṉ’ eṉḏṟu vāyāl navilādu, uḷ āṙ maṉattāl ‘nāṉ’ eṉḏṟu eṅgu undum eṉa nāḍudal-ē ñāṉa-neṟi ām. aṉḏṟi, ‘aṉḏṟu idu, nāṉ ām adu’ eṉḏṟu uṉṉal tuṇai ām; adu vicāram āmā?

English translation: Not saying ‘I’ by mouth, investigating by an inward sinking mind where one rises as ‘I’ is alone the path of jñāna [knowledge or awareness]. Instead, thinking ‘[I am] not this [body or mind], I am that [brahman]’ is an aid, [but] is it vicāra [investigation]?

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 30:

.

பதச்சேதம்: நான் ஆர் என மனம் உள் நாடி உளம் நண்ணவே, ‘நான்’ ஆம் அவன் தலை நாணம் உற, ‘நான் நான்’ ஆ தோன்றும் ஒன்று தானாக. தோன்றினும், ‘நான்’ அன்று. பொருள் பூன்றம் அது, தான் ஆம் பொருள்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): nāṉ ār eṉa maṉam uḷ nāḍi uḷam naṇṇavē, ‘nāṉ’ ām avaṉ talai nāṇam uṟa, ‘nāṉ nāṉ’ ā tōṉḏṟum oṉḏṟu tāṉāha. tōṉḏṟiṉum, ‘nāṉ’ aṉḏṟu. poruḷ-pūṉḏṟam adu, tāṉ ām poruḷ.

English translation: As soon as the mind reaches the heart inwardly investigating who am I, when [thereby] he who is ‘I’ [ego] dies, one thing [or the one] appears spontaneously [or as oneself] as ‘I am I’ [that is, as awareness of oneself as oneself alone]. Though it appears, it is not ‘I’ [namely ego]. It is pūṉḏṟam [the whole or pūrṇa, which is infinite, eternal and unchanging], the poruḷ [the real substance or vastu], the poruḷ that is oneself.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 32:

.

பதச்சேதம்: ‘அது நீ’ என்று அம் மறைகள் ஆர்த்திடவும், அதுவே தான் ஆய் என்றும் அமர்வதால், தன்னை எது என்று தான் தேர்ந்து இராது, ‘அது நான், இது அன்று’ என்று எண்ணல் உரன் இன்மையினால்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘adu nī’ eṉḏṟu a-m-maṟaigaḷ ārttiḍavum, taṉṉai edu eṉḏṟu tāṉ tērndu irādu, ‘adu nāṉ, idu aṉḏṟu’ eṉḏṟu eṇṇal uraṉ iṉmaiyiṉāl, eṉḏṟum aduvē tāṉ-āy amarvadāl.

English translation: When the Vēdas proclaim ‘That is you’, instead of oneself being, knowing oneself [by investigating] what [am I], thinking ‘I am that [brahman], not this [body or mind]’ is due to non-existence of strength [of bhakti and vairāgya] [and consequent lack of clarity of heart and mind], because that [brahman] alone is always seated [calmly] as oneself.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 33:

பதச்சேதம்: ‘என்னை அறியேன் நான்’, ‘என்னை அறிந்தேன் நான்’ என்னல் நகைப்புக்கு இடன் ஆகும். என்னை? தனை விடயம் ஆக்க இரு தான் உண்டோ? ஒன்று ஆய் அனைவர் அனுபூதி உண்மை ஆல்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘eṉṉai aṟiyēṉ nāṉ’, ‘eṉṉai aṟindēṉ nāṉ’ eṉṉal nahaippukku iḍaṉ āhum. eṉṉai? taṉai viḍayam ākka iru tāṉ uṇḍō? oṉḏṟu āy aṉaivar aṉubhūti uṇmai āl.

English translation: Saying ‘I do not know myself’ [or] ‘I have known myself’ is ground for ridicule. Why? To make oneself viṣaya [an object], are there two selves [a knowing self and a known self]? Because being one is the truth, [as is known by] the experience of everyone.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 38:

.

பதச்சேதம்: வினைமுதல் நாம் ஆயின், விளை பயன் துய்ப்போம். வினைமுதல் ஆர் என்று வினவி தனை அறிய, கர்த்தத்துவம் போய், கருமம் மூன்றும் கழலும். நித்தமாம் முத்தி நிலை.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): viṉaimudal nām āyiṉ, viḷai payaṉ tuyppōm. viṉaimudal ār eṉḏṟu viṉavi taṉai aṟiya, karttattuvam pōy, karumam mūṉḏṟum kaṙalum. nittam-ām mutti nilai.

English translation: If we are the doer of action, we will experience the resulting fruit. Investigating who is the doer of action, when one knows oneself, kartṛtva [doership] [and bhōktṛtva, experiencership] having departed, all three karmas [āgāmya (actions that one does under the sway of one’s own will), sañcita (the heap of fruits of such actions that one is yet to experience) and prārabdha (destiny or fate, which is the fruits that have been allotted for one to experience in one’s current life)] will slip off. [This is] the state of mukti [liberation], which is eternal.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 39:

.

பதச்சேதம்: ‘பத்தன் நான்’ என்னும் மட்டே, பந்த முத்தி சிந்தனைகள். பத்தன் ஆர் என்று தன்னை பார்க்குங்கால், சித்தமாய் நித்த முத்தன் தான் நிற்க, நிற்காதேல் பந்த சிந்தை, முத்தி சிந்தை முன் நிற்குமோ?

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘baddhaṉ nāṉ’ eṉṉum maṭṭē, bandha mutti cintaṉaigaḷ. baddhaṉ ār eṉḏṟu taṉṉai pārkkuṅgāl, siddhamāy nitta muttaṉ tāṉ niṯka, niṯkādēl bandha cintai, mutti cintai muṉ niṯkumō?

English translation: Only so long as one says ‘I am someone bound’ [that is, only so long as one experiences oneself as if one were bound] [will there be] thoughts of bandha [bondage] and mukti [liberation]. When one looks at oneself [to see] who is the one who is bound, and when [thereby] oneself, the one who is eternally liberated, [alone] remains as siddham [what is firmly established or always accomplished], since thought of bondage will not remain, will thought of liberation henceforth remain?

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu verse 40:

உருவ மருவ முருவருவ மூன்றா

பதச்சேதம்: உருவம், அருவம், உருவருவம், மூன்று ஆம் உறும் முத்தி என்னில், உரைப்பன்: உருவம், அருவம், உருவருவம் ஆயும் அகந்தை உரு அழிதல் முத்தி. உணர்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uruvam, aruvam, uru-v-aruvam, mūṉḏṟu ām uṟum mutti eṉṉil, uraippaṉ: uruvam, aruvam, uru-v-aruvam āyum ahandai-uru aṙidal mutti. uṇar.

English translation: If it is said that mukti [liberation] that one will experience is three [of three kinds], form, formless, form-formless [with form, without form, or either with form or without form], I will say: The ego-form, which distinguishes [these three kinds of liberation], form, formless, form-formless, being destroyed is liberation. Know.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham (The Supplement to Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu)

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 10:

பதச்சேதம்: தேகம் கடம் நிகர் சடம்; இதற்கு ‘அகம்’ எனும் திகழ்வு இலதால், ந அகம், சடலம் இல் துயிலினில் தினம் உறும் நமது இயல் ஆல். ‘க: அகங்கரன்? எவண் உளன்?’ உணர்ந்து உளர் உள குகை உள்ளே, ‘ச: அகம்’ புரண அருணகிரி சிவ விபு சுயம் ஒளிர்வான்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): dēham ghaṭam nihar jaḍam; idaṟku ‘aham’ eṉum tihaṙvu iladāl, na aham, jaḍalam il tuyiliṉil diṉam uṟum namadu iyal āl. ‘kaḥ ahaṅkaraṉ? evaṇ uḷaṉ?’ uṇarndu uḷar uḷa guhai uḷḷē, ‘saḥ aham’ phuraṇa aruṇagiri śiva vibhu suyam oḷirvāṉ.

English translation: The body is jaḍa [non-aware] like a pot; since the shining [or brightness] called ‘I’ [namely the self-shining awareness ‘I am’] does not exist for it [that is, since it is not aware of itself as ‘I’], [and] since our [real] nature [our fundamental awareness ‘I am’, which is our very being] exists [and shines] daily in [dreamless] sleep, in which the body does not exist, it [this body] is not I. Within the cave of the heart of those who [just] are [as they actually are], knowing [or being aware of] [themself as such] [by investigating] who is he who is ego [and] where is he, the omnipresent Lord, Arunagiri-Siva, will shine spontaneously [as] the sphuraṇa [clarity or clear awareness] ‘He is I’.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 10 (Sanskrit original):

देहं मृन्मयवज्जडात्मकमहं बुद्धिर्नतस्यास्त्यतो
नाहं तत्तदभावसुप्तिसमये सिद्धात्मसद्भावतः ।

kōhaṁ bhāvayutaḥkutōvaradhiyā dṛṣṭvātmaniṣṭhātmanāṁ
sōhaṁ sphūrtitayā’ruṇācalaśivaḥ pūrṇōvibhātisvayam ||

पदच्छेद: देहम् मृन्मय वत् जड आत्मकम्. अहम् बुद्धिः न तस्य अस्ति. अतः न अहम्. तद् तद् अभाव सुप्ति समये सिद्ध आत्म सत् भावतः. कः अहम् भाव युतः कुतस् वर धिया दृष्ट्वा आत्म निष्ठ आत्मनाम् सः अहम् स्फूर्तितया अरुणाचल शिवः पूर्णः विभाति स्वयम्.

Padacchēda (word-separation): dēham mṛnmaya vat jaḍa ātmakam. aham buddhiḥ na tasya asti. ataḥ na aham. tad tad abhāva supti samayē siddha ātma sat bhāvataḥ. kaḥ aham-bhāva-yutaḥ kutas vara dhiyā dṛṣṭvā ātma niṣṭha ātmanām saḥ aham sphūrtitayā aruṇācala śivaḥ pūrṇaḥ vibhāti svayam.

English translation: The body is jaḍātmakam [of the nature of jaḍa: non-awareness] like [a pot or] anything [else] composed of clay. There is no ahaṁ-buddhi [awareness ‘I’] belonging to it [in other words, it does not have any awareness of itself as ‘I’]. Consequently [it is] not I. Also because of the established [or certain] persistence [endurance or continuity] of the existence of oneself at the time of [or during] sleep, in which it [namely the body] is non-existent. To selves fixed in themself [firmly being as they actually are] having seen by [means of] a [keenly] discerning intellect [or pure mind] who is the one combined with ahaṁ-bhāva [the ‘I’-condition or state of being ‘I’, namely ego], [and] from where [did it arise], pūrṇa [the one infinite whole], [namely] Arunachala Siva, shines spontaneously as sōhaṁ-sphūrti [the clarity ‘He is I’].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 14:

ṉāhamaṉa lēyuṇmai yām.

பதச்சேதம்: வினையும், விபத்தி, வியோகம், அஞ்ஞானம் இணையவை யார்க்கு என்று ஆய்ந்திடலே வினை, பத்தி, யோகம், உணர்வு. ஆய்ந்திட, ‘நான்’ இன்றி அவை என்றும் இல். தானாக மனலே உண்மை ஆம்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): viṉai-y-um, vibhatti, viyōgam, aññāṉam iṉaiyavai yārkku eṉḏṟu āyndiḍal-ē viṉai, bhatti, yōgam, uṇarvu. āyndiḍa, ‘nāṉ’ iṉḏṟi avai eṉḏṟum il. tāṉ-āha maṉal-ē uṇmai ām.

English translation: Investigating for whom [or to whom] are those [defects] such as karma [action], vibhakti [lack of devotion], viyōga [separation] and ajñāna [ignorance], is itself [or alone] [what will fulfil the purpose and aims of each of the paths of] karma [desireless action or niṣkāmya karma], bhakti [devotion or love], yōga [joining, yoking or harnessing, particularly in the sense of yoking the mind to the object or target of its meditation or to any spiritual practice, and in this context referring to practices whose aim is to bring about ‘cessation of mental activity’ (citta-vṛtti nirōdhaḥ)] and jñāna [knowledge or awareness in the sense of true self-knowledge, which is awareness of oneself as one actually is]. When one investigates [oneself keenly enough], [the ‘I’ for whom karma, vibhakti, viyōga and ajñāna seem to exist, namely ego, will cease to exist, and] without [that] ‘I’ they [namely karma, vibhakti, viyōga and ajñāna] never exist. Only being permanently as oneself [one’s own real nature, namely pure awareness] is what is true [or real].

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 31:

பதச்சேதம்: வண்டி துயில்வானுக்கு அவ் வண்டி செலல், நிற்றல் ஒடு, வண்டி தனி உற்றிடுதல் மானுமே, வண்டி ஆம் ஊன உடல் உள்ளே உறங்கும் மெய்ஞ்ஞானிக்கும் ஆன தொழில், நிட்டை, உறக்கம்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): vaṇḍi tuyilvāṉukku a-v-vaṇḍi selal, ṉiṯṟal oḍu, vaṇḍi taṉi uṯṟiḍudal māṉumē, vaṇḍi ām ūṉa uḍal uḷḷē uṟaṅgum meyññāṉikkum āṉa toṙil, niṭṭhai, uṟakkam.

English translation: To the mey-jñāni [the knower of reality], who is asleep within the fleshy body, which is like a cart, activity [of mind or body], niṣṭhā [firmness, fixity, steadiness, motionlessness, inactivity or samādhi] and sleep are just like, to a person sleeping in a cart, that cart moving, standing or the cart remaining alone [separated from the bullocks that were yoked to it]. [That is, just as the various states of a cart are not experienced by a person who is sleeping in it, the various states of body and mind are not experienced by the jñāni.]

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 32:

பதச்சேதம்: நனவு, கனவு, துயில் நாடுவார்க்கு, அப்பால் நனவுதுயில் ‘துரிய’ நாமத்து எனும். அத் துரியம் அதே உளதால், தோன்றும் மூன்று இன்றால், துரிய அதீதம். துணி.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): naṉavu, kaṉavu, tuyil nāḍuvārkku, appal naṉavu-tuyil ‘turiya’ nāmattu eṉum. a-t-turiyam adē uḷadāl, tōṉḏṟum mūṉḏṟu iṉḏṟāl, turiya atītam. tuṇi.

English translation: For those who experience waking, dream and sleep, waking-sleep [the eternal and immutable state of pure awareness, in which one is awake to (or clearly aware of) oneself as one actually is and therefore asleep to (or unaware of) everything else whatsoever], [which is] beyond [those other three states], is called by the name ‘turya’ [or turīya, the ‘fourth’]. [However] since that turya alone exists, [and] since the three [states] that appear [or seem to exist] [namely waking, dream and sleep] do not exist, [what is called ‘turya’ is actually] turya-v-atīta [turīyātīta, what transcends or is beyond the ‘fourth’]. Be assured.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 33:

பதச்சேதம்: ‘சஞ்சித ஆகாமியங்கள் சாராவாம் ஞானிக்கு; ஊழ் விஞ்சும்’ எனல் வேற்றார் கேள்விக்கு விளம்பும் சொல் ஆம். பர்த்தா போய் கைம்மை உறா பத்தினி எஞ்சாதது போல், கர்த்தா [போய்] போம் மூவினையும். காண்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘sañcita āgāmiyaṅgaḷ sārāvām ñāṉikku; ūṙ viñcum’ eṉal vēṯṟār kēḷvikku viḷambum sol ām. bharttā pōy kaimmai uṟā pattiṉi eñjādadu pōl, karttā [pōy] pōm mūviṉaiyum. kāṇ.

English translation: Saying ‘sañcita and āgāmya do not adhere to the jñāni; prārabdha does remain’ is an answer told to the questions of others. Like, the husband dying, an unwidowed wife not remaining, the doer [dying], all the three karmas will cease. See.

Explanatory paraphrase: Saying ‘sañcita and āgāmya do not adhere to the jñāni [but] prārabdha does remain [for the jñāni to experience]’ is [just] an answer told [as a concession] to the questions of others [namely those who are unwilling or unable to understand and accept the deeper teachings and implications of advaita]. Just as [among the several wives of one husband] an unwidowed wife does not remain when [their] husband dies, all the three karmas will cease [when] the doer [namely ego, who is the doer of āgāmya and the experiencer of its fruit] [dies]. See.

Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu Anubandham verse 36:

பதச்சேதம்: கற்றும் அடங்காரில் கல்லாதாரே உய்ந்தார்: பற்றும் மத பேயின்பால் உய்ந்தார்; சுற்று பல சிந்தைவாய் நோய் உய்ந்தார்; சீர் தேடி ஓடல் உய்ந்தார். உய்ந்தது ஒன்று அன்று என்று உணர்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): kaṯṟum aḍaṅgāril kallādārē uyndār: paṯṟum mada pēyiṉbāl uyndār; suṯṟu pala cintaivāy nōy uyndār; sīr tēḍi ōḍal uyndār. uyndadu oṉḏṟu aṉḏṟu eṉḏṟu uṇar.

English translation: Rather than those who have not subsided though learned, those who are not learned are saved: they are saved from the grasping demon of pride; they are saved from the disease of many whirling thoughts; they are saved from running seeking fame. Know that what they are saved from is not one.

Explanatory paraphrase: Rather than those who have not subsided though learned [that is, those who have not humbly subsided back within in spite of studying, learning and mastering a vast range of spiritual and philosophical texts], those who are not learned are saved: they are saved from the demon of pride, which grasps [seizes or possesses] [the mind and heart of anyone who is not willing to humbly subside back within]; they are saved from the disease of many whirling thoughts [which infects the mind of anyone who has learnt a lot but does not turn back within to subside forever in the inmost depth of the heart]; they are saved from running [out towards the world] seeking fame [glory, reputation, esteem and high regard]. Know that what they are saved from is not [just] one [but many such perils and evils].

பதச்சேதம்: தான் அன்றி யார் உண்டு? தன்னை யார் என் சொலின் என்? தான் தன்னை வாழ்த்துகினும், தாழ்த்துகினும் தான் என்ன? ‘தான்’, ‘பிறர்’ என்று ஓராமல், தன்னிலையில் பேராமல் தான் என்றும் நின்றிடவே தான்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): tāṉ aṉḏṟi yār uṇḍu? taṉṉai yār eṉ soliṉ eṉ? tāṉ taṉṉai vāṙttugiṉum, tāṙttugiṉum tāṉ eṉṉa? ‘tāṉ’, ‘piṟar’ eṉḏṟu ōrāmal, taṉṉilaiyil pērāmal tāṉ eṉḏṟum niṉḏṟiḍavē tāṉ.

English translation: When oneself always stands [stays or remains] without departing [that is, without ever rising as ego] in the state of oneself [the real and natural state of oneself, in which one exists and shines as pure being-awareness (sat-cit), as one always actually is], without knowing as ‘oneself’ and ‘others’ [that is, without ever experiencing any distinction such as ‘this is myself’ and ‘those are others’], who is there besides oneself? If whoever says whatever about oneself [whether they praise or disparage oneself], [so] what [or what does it matter]? Even if oneself praises oneself, or even if [oneself] disparages [oneself], so what [or what indeed does it matter]?

Ēkāṉma Pañcakam verse 1:

தன்னை மறந்து தனுவேதா னாவெண்ணி
யெண்ணில் பிறவி யெடுத்திறுதி — தன்னை
யுணர்ந்துதா னாத லுலகசஞ் சாரக்
கனவின் விழித்தலே காண்.

taṉṉai maṟandu taṉuvēdā ṉāveṇṇi
yeṇṇil piṟavi yeḍuttiṟudi — taṉṉai
yuṇarndudā ṉāda lulahasañ cārak
kaṉaviṉ viṙittalē kāṇ
.

பதச்சேதம்: {ஒருவன் முன்பாக} தன்னை மறந்து, தனுவே தானா எண்ணி, எண் இல் பிறவி எடுத்து, இறுதி தன்னை உணர்ந்து, தான் ஆதல் உலக சஞ்சார கனவின் விழித்தலே. காண்{க}.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): taṉṉai maṟandu, taṉuvē tāṉā eṇṇi, eṇ il piṟavi eḍuttu, iṟudi taṉṉai uṇarndu, tāṉ ādal ulaha sañcāra kaṉaviṉ viṙittalē. kāṇ{ga}.

English translation: {One formerly} having forgotten oneself, having considered a body alone to be oneself, and having taken innumerable births, finally knowing oneself and being oneself is just [like] waking up from a dream of wandering about the world. {May you} see.

Ēkāṉma Pañcakam verse 4:

பொன்னுக்கு வேறாகப் பூடண முள்ளதோ

தன்னை விடுத்துத் தனுவேது — தன்னைத்
தனுவென்பா னஞ்ஞானி தானாகக் கொள்வான்
றனையறிந்த ஞானி தரி.

poṉṉukku vēṟāhap pūṭaṇa muḷḷadō
taṉṉai viḍuttut taṉuvēdu — taṉṉait
taṉuveṉbā ṉaññāṉi tāṉāhak koḷvāṉ
ḏṟaṉaiyaṟinda ñāṉi tari
.

பதச்சேதம்: {வத்து ஆம்} பொன்னுக்கு வேறாக பூடணம் உள்ளதோ? தன்னை விடுத்து, தனு ஏது? தன்னை தனு என்பான் அஞ்ஞானி. தானாக கொள்வான் தனை அறிந்த ஞானி. தரி{ப்பாய்}.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): {vattu-v-ām} poṉṉukku vēṟāha pūḍaṇam uḷḷadō? taṉṉai viḍuttu, taṉu ēdu? taṉṉai taṉu eṉbāṉ aññāṉi. tāṉāha koḷvāṉ taṉai aṟinda ñāṉi. tari{ppāy}.

English translation: Does an ornament exist as different to [or other than] gold {which is vastu [the substance]}? [Likewise] without oneself, where is the body? One who considers oneself to be a body is an ajñāni. One who takes [oneself] to be oneself is a jñāni, who has known oneself. {May you} stop [be firm or bear in mind].

Ēkāṉma Pañcakam verse 5:

எப்போது முள்ளதவ் வேகான்ம வத்துவே
யப்போதவ் வத்துவை யாதிகுரு — செப்பாது
செப்பித் தெரியுமா செய்தன ரேலெவர்
செப்பித் தெரிவிப்பர் செப்பு.

eppōdu muḷḷadav vēkāṉma vattuvē
yappōdav vattuvai yādiguru — seppādu
seppit teriyumā seydaṉa rēlevar
seppit terivippar ceppu
.

பதச்சேதம்: {தனது ஒளியால்} எப்போதும் உள்ளது அவ் ஏகான்ம வத்துவே. அப்போது அவ் வத்துவை ஆதி குரு செப்பாது செப்பி தெரியுமா செய்தனரேல், எவர் செப்பி தெரிவிப்பர்? செப்பு{க}.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): {taṉadu oḷiyāl} eppōdum uḷḷadu a-vv-ēkāṉma-vattuvē. appōdu a-v-vattuvai ādi-guru seppādu seppi teriyumā seydaṉarēl, evar seppi terivippar? seppu{ha}.

English translation: What always exists {by its own light} is only that ēkātma-vastu [the one self-substance, namely oneself, the one real substance]. If at that time the ādi-guru [the original guru, Dakshinamurti] made that vastu known [only by] speaking without speaking, {may you} say, who can make it known [by] speaking?

Appaḷa Pāṭṭu (The Appaḷam Song)

Appaḷa Pāṭṭu Pallavi (Refrain):

அப்பள மிட்டுப் பாரு — அத்தைச்
சாப்பிட்டுன் னாசையைத் தீரு.

appaḷa miṭṭup pāru - attaic
cāppiṭṭuṉ ṉāśaiyait tīru.

பதச்சேதம்: அப்பளம் இட்டு பாரு; அத்தை சாப்பிட்டு, உன் ஆசையை தீரு.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): appaḷam iṭṭu pāru; attai sāppiṭṭu, uṉ āśaiyai tīru.

English translation: Making appaḷam [in the manner prescribed in this song], see [yourself as you actually are, namely as ‘I am I’]; eating it [by experiencing yourself as ‘oneself alone is oneself’], put an end to your desire [for anything other than yourself].

Appaḷa Pāṭṭu Anupallavi (Post-refrain):

>இப்புவி தன்னி லேங்கித் திரியாமற்

—      (ap)

பதச்சேதம்: இப் புவி தன்னில் ஏங்கி திரியாமல், சத் போத சுக சற்குரு ஆனவர் செப்பாது சொன்ன தத்துவம் ஆகிற, ஒப்பு உயர்வு இல்லா ஓர் மொழியின்படி, (அப்பளம் இட்டு பாரு; …)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): i-b-bhuvi taṉṉil ēṅgi tiriyāmal, sat-bhōda-sukha saṯguru āṉavar seppādu soṉṉa tattuvam āhiṟa, oppu uyarvu illā ōr moṙiyiṉpaḍi, (appaḷam iṭṭu pāru; …)

English translation: Without wandering about yearning in this world, in accordance with the unique language without equal or greater, which is the truth that he who is sadguru, existence-awareness-happiness, spoke without speaking, (making appaḷam, see; …)

Explanatory paraphrase: Without wandering about yearning [with desire for pleasures] in this world, in accordance with the unique language [namely silence], [which is] without [anything that is] equal [to] or greater [than it], [and] which is the tattva [reality, truth or true principle] that he who is sadguru [namely Dakshinamurti], [who is] sat-bhōda-sukha [sat-cit-ānanda or being-awareness-happiness], spoke without speaking, (making appaḷam, see; eating it, put an end to your desire.)

Appaḷa Pāṭṭu verse 1:

தானல்லா வைங்கோச க்ஷேத்ர மிதில்வளர்

—      (ap)

பதச்சேதம்: தான் அல்லா ஐம் கோச க்ஷேத்ரம் இதில் வளர் ‘தான்’ என்னும் மானம் ஆம் தான்ய உளுந்தை நான் ஆர் என் ஞான விசார திரிகையில் ‘நான் அல்ல’ என்றே உடைத்து பொடித்து, (அப்பளம் இட்டு பாரு; ...)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): tāṉ allā aim kōśa kṣētram idil vaḷar ‘tāṉ’ eṉṉum māṉam ām tāṉya uḷundai nāṉ ār eṉ ñāṉa-vicāra tirigaiyil ‘nāṉ alla’ eṉḏṟē uḍaittu poḍittu, (appaḷam iṭṭu pāru; …)

English translation: In the hand-mill of jñāna-vicāra [awareness-investigation], [which is the practice of being keenly self-attentive in order to see] who am I, breaking and pulverising the black gram grains, which are the māna [attachment, identification, pride or conceit] ‘myself’ [the dēhābhimāna, the proud identification and attachment ‘this field of five sheaths is myself’] that grows [and flourishes] in this, the field of five sheaths [namely body, life, mind, intellect and will], which is not oneself, [thereby separating that entire field of five sheaths from oneself] as ‘not I’, (making appaḷam, see; eating it, put an end to your desire.)

Appaḷa Pāṭṭu verse 4:

மோனமுத் ரையாகு முடிவில்லாப் பாத்ரத்தில்
ஞானாக்னி யாற்காயு நற்பிரம்ம நெய்யதி
னானது வாகவே நாளும் பொரித்துத்

ñāṉāgṉi yāṯkāyu naṯbiramma neyyadi
ṉāṉadu vāhavē nāḷum porittut
tāṉē tāṉāha bhujikkat taṉmaya
—      (ap)

பதச்சேதம்: மோன முத்ரை ஆகும் முடிவில்லா பாத்ரத்தில் ஞான அக்னியால் காயும் நல் பிரம்ம நெய் அதில் ‘நான் அது’ ஆகவே நாளும் பொரித்து, ‘தானே தான்’ ஆக புஜிக்க, தன்மய (அப்பளம் இட்டு பாரு...)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): mōṉa mudrai āhum muḍivillā pātrattil ñāṉa agṉiyāl kāyum nal biramma ney adil ‘nāṉ adu’ āhavē nāḷum porittu, ‘tāṉē tāṉ’ āha bhujikka, taṉmaya (appaḷam iṭṭu pāru; …)

English translation: To experience [ātma-svarūpa, the real nature of oneself] as ‘oneself alone is oneself’ [‘myself alone is myself’ or ‘I alone am I’], in that, the excellent ghee [or pure clarified butter] of brahman, which is heated by jñānāgni [the fire of jñāna or pure awareness] in the infinite pan, which is mauna-mudrā [the sign that is silence, namely the infinite space of silence, which is the sign that inwardly reveals the real nature of oneself as ‘I am just I’], constantly frying [the dry wafers of appaḷam dough prepared in the manner described in the previous three verses in accordance with the unique language of silence described in the anupallavi] as ‘I am that [namely brahman, the pure awareness that always shines as I]’, (making) tanmaya (appaḷam [appaḷam composed of tat, ‘that’, namely brahman], see; eating it, put an end to your desire.)

Āṉma-Viddai (The Science of Knowing Oneself)

Āṉma-Viddai Pallavi (Refrain) [composed by Sri Muruganar]:

ஐயே! யதிசுலபம் — ஆன்மவித்தை
ஐயே! யதிசுலபம்.

aiyē! yatisulabham — āṉmaviddai
aiyē! yatisulabham
.

பதச்சேதம்: ஐயே, அதி சுலபம், ஆன்ம வித்தை, ஐயே, அதி சுலபம்!

Padacchēdam (word-separation): aiyē, ati sulabham, āṉma-viddai, aiyē, ati sulabham!

English translation: Ah, extremely easy, ātma-vidyā [knowing oneself], ah, [it is so] extremely easy!

Āṉma-Viddai Anupallavi (Post-refrain) [composed by Sri Muruganar]:

நொய்யார் தமக்குமுளங் கையா மலகக்கனி
பொய்யா யொழியமிகு மெய்யா யுளதான்மா.      (ஐயே)

noyyār tamakkumuḷaṅ gaiyā malakakkaṉi
poyyā yoṙiyamihu meyyā yuḷadāṉmā
.      (aiyē)

பதச்சேதம்: நொய்யார் தமக்கும் உளங்கை ஆமலக கனி பொய் ஆய் ஒழிய மிகு மெய் ஆய் உளது ஆன்மா. (ஐயே, அதிசுலபம், ...).

Padacchēdam (word-separation): noyyār tamakkum uḷaṅgai āmalaka kaṉi poy āy oṙiya mihu mey āy uḷadu āṉmā. (aiyē, ati sulabham, ...)

English translation: Ātman [oneself] exists [clearly] as so very real even for those who are simple-minded that [in comparison] [even] an āmalaka fruit on the palm ends [declines or fades away] as unreal [being far less clear and obvious than oneself, and hence, unlike oneself, open to the serious possibility that it could be just an illusory appearance]. ([Therefore] ah, extremely easy, ātma-vidyā, ah, extremely easy!)

Āṉma-Viddai verse 1:

மெய்யாய் நிரந்தரந்தா னையா திருந்திடவும்

   viḷaṅgumē; iru ḷaḍaṅgumē; iḍa roḍuṅgumē;
      iṉbam poṅgumē
.      (aiyē)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): mey āy nirantaram tāṉ aiyādu [or: naiyādu] irundiḍavum, poy ām uḍambu ulaham mey ā muḷaittu eṙum. poy mai ār niṉaivu aṇuvum uyyādu oḍukkiḍavē, mey ār idaya veḷi veyyōṉ suyam āṉmā viḷaṅgumē; iruḷ aḍaṅgumē; iḍar oḍuṅgumē; iṉbam poṅgumē. (aiyē, ati sulabham, ...)

English translation: Though oneself exists incessantly and indubitably [or imperishably] as real, the body and world, which are unreal, arise sprouting [springing forth or appearing] as [if] real. When thought, which is pervaded by [or full of] unreal darkness [the darkness of self-ignorance, namely ego, which is the cause for the appearance of the body and world], is dissolved without reviving even an iota [in other words, when it is dissolved in such a manner that it does not ever revive even an iota], in the heart-space, which [alone] is real, oneself, [who is] the sun [of pure awareness], will certainly shine by oneself [spontaneously or of one’s own accord]; darkness [self-ignorance in the form of ego] will cease; suffering will end; happiness will surge forth. ([Therefore] ah, extremely easy, ātma-vidyā, ah, extremely easy!)

Āṉma-Viddai verse 2:

ஊனா ருடலிதுவே நானா மெனுநினைவே
நானா நினைவுகள்சே ரோர்நா ரெனுமதனா
னானா ரிடமெதென்றுட் போனா னினைவுகள்போய்

   ஞானமே; இதுவே மோனமே; ஏக வானமே;
      இன்பத் தானமே.      (ஐயே)

ūṉā ruḍaliduvē nāṉā meṉuniṉaivē

   ñāṉamē; iduvē mōṉamē; ēka vāṉamē;
      iṉbat tāṉamē
.      (aiyē)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘ūṉ ār uḍal iduvē nāṉ ām’ eṉum niṉaivē nāṉā niṉaivugaḷ sēr ōr nār eṉum adaṉāl, nāṉ ār iḍam edu eṉḏṟu uḷ pōṉāl, niṉaivugaḷ pōy, ‘nāṉ nāṉ’ eṉa guhai uḷ tāṉāy tihaṙum āṉma-ñāṉamē. iduvē mōṉamē, ēka vāṉamē, iṉba-tāṉamē. (aiyē, ati sulabham, ...)

English translation: Since the thought ‘this, the body composed of flesh, itself is I’ alone is the one thread to which [all] the various thoughts are joined [or on which they are all strung together], if one goes within [investigating] what is the place from which I spread out [or: who am I, what is (my) place], [all] thoughts [including the root thought, ‘I am this body’] will cease [or depart], and in the cave [of one’s heart] ātma-jñāna [pure self-awareness] alone will shine spontaneously [or as oneself] as ‘I am I’ [that is, as awareness of oneself as oneself alone]. This alone is silence, the one space [of pure awareness], the abode of bliss. ([Therefore] ah, extremely easy, ātma-vidyā, ah, extremely easy!).

Āṉma-Viddai verse 4:

கன்மா திகட்டவிழ சென்மா திநட்டமெழ

   jyōtiyē; nitāṉu bhūtiyē; irādu bhītiyē;
      iṉbavam bhōdhiyē
.   (aiyē)

Padacchēdam (word-separation): kaṉma-ādi kaṭṭu aviṙa, jeṉma-ādi naṭṭam eṙa, e-m-mārggam-adaṉiṉum i-m-mārggam mikku eḷidu. sol māṉada taṉuviṉ kaṉma-ādi siṟidu iṉḏṟi summā amarndu irukka, ammā, ahattil āṉma-jyōtiyē; nita āṉubhūtiyē; irādu bhītiyē; iṉba ambhōdhiyē. (aiyē, ati sulabham, ...)

English translation: For the bonds beginning with karma [that is, the bonds of action and of all that results from it] to be untied, and to rise [or be resurrected] from the devastation beginning with birth [that is, to transcend and become free from the miseries of embodied existence, which begins with birth and ends with death], more than whatever [other] path, this path [of ātma-vicāra] is what is exceedingly easy. When one just is, resting [calmly as pure awareness] without the least karma [action] of mind, speech or body, ah, in [one’s] heart the light of oneself alone [will shine forth clearly as ‘I am I’]. [Having thereby drowned and lost oneself (namely ego) forever in this perfectly peaceful and infinitely clear state of pure awareness, it will be clear that this is one’s] eternal experience. Fear will not exist. The ocean of [infinite] bliss alone [will remain]. ([Therefore] ah, extremely easy, ātma-vidyā, ah, extremely easy!)

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ (Solitary Verses of Spiritual Teaching)

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 4:

பிறந்தநா ளேதோ பெருவிழாச் செய்வீர்

liṉḏṟeṉḏṟu moṉḏṟā yilahuporu ḷiṟpiṟanda
vaṉḏṟē piṟandanā ḷām.

பதச்சேதம்: பிறந்த நாள் ஏதோ? பெரு விழா செய்வீர், பிறந்தது எவண் நாம் என்று பேணி, பிறந்து இறத்தல் இன்று என்றும் ஒன்றாய் இலகு பொருளில் பிறந்த அன்றே பிறந்த நாள் ஆம்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): piṟanda nāḷ ēdō? peru viṙā seyvīr, piṟandadu evaṇ nām eṉḏṟu pēṇi, piṟandu iṟattal iṉḏṟu eṉḏṟum oṉḏṟāy ilahu poruḷil piṟanda aṉḏṟē piṟanda nāḷ ām.

English translation: Whatever is [the real] birthday? You who make a great celebration [about a so-called birthday], only that day when, [by] carefully attending to [ourself, the source] from which we were born [as ego, the false awareness ‘I am this body’], we are born in poruḷ [the real substance or vastu], which without [ever] being born or dying always shines as one [namely the one infinite and immutable real awareness, ‘I am’], is [the real] birthday.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 5:

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘piṟanda nāḷ ēṉum piṟappukku aṙādu, piṟanda nāḷ uṯsavamē pēṇal iṟanda piṇattiṟku alaṅkarikkum peṭpu’ eṉḏṟē taṉṉai uṇarndu oḍuṅgal tāṉē uṇarvu.

English translation: Understanding ‘Instead of weeping [or lamenting] for [one’s] birth at least on [one’s] birthday, cherishing [one’s] birthday as a festival is [like] the infatuation [of someone] who adorns [or decorates] a dead corpse’, only subsiding [and dissolving forever in one’s real nature] [by investigating and thereby] being aware of oneself [as one actually is] is [real] awareness.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 9:

Padacchēdam (word-separation): tiṉḏṟu amalam ākkum mala[m] dēhōhar pavvī tiṉ paṉḏṟiyiṉum kēḍā pahar.

English translation: Declare those who take as ‘I’ a [human] body, which eating what is pure [but then transforming it] produces filth, to be worse than a pig that eats faeces.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 10:

உய்ந்தான்றான் மன்னுயிர்க ளுய்விப்பா னன்னியனோ

பதச்சேதம்: உய்ந்தான் தான் மன்னுயிர்கள் உய்விப்பான்; அன்னியனோ அந்தனுக்கு அந்தன் துணை ஆம் ஆறு.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): uyndāṉ-tāṉ maṉṉuyirgaḷ uyvippāṉ; aṉṉiyaṉō andhaṉukku andhaṉ tuṇai ām āṟu.

English translation: Only one who has been saved [by subsiding and dissolving forever back into the infinite silence of pure being-awareness] will [be able to] save souls, whereas anyone else will be like the guidance [help or assistance] a blind person [tries to give] to [another] blind person [in other words, they will be like the blind leading the blind].

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 12:

Padacchēdam (word-separation): ñāṉam oṉḏṟē uṇmai. nāṉā-v-āy kāṇgiṉḏṟa ñāṉam aṉḏṟi iṉḏṟu ām aññāṉam-tāṉ ñāṉam ām taṉṉai aṉḏṟi iṉḏṟu. aṇigaḷ-tām palavum poy; mey ām poṉṉai aṉḏṟi uṇḍō? puhal.

English translation: Jñāna [pure awareness] alone is real. Ajñāna [ignorance], which is not other than [or does not exist besides or except as] jñāna [awareness] that sees [the one real jñāna] as nānā [manifold or diverse], itself is not other than [or does not exist besides or except as] oneself, who is [real] awareness. All the many ornaments are unreal; are they other than [or do they exist besides or except as] gold, which is real? Say.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 13:

நாமன்றி நாளேது நாநம்மை நாடாது

பதச்சேதம்: நாம் அன்றி நாள் ஏது? நாம் நம்மை நாடாது ‘நாம் உடல்’ என்று எண்ணில், நமை நாள் உண்ணும். நாம் உடம்போ? நாம் இன்று, சென்ற, வரு நாள் என்றும் ஒன்று. அதனால் நாம் உண்டு, நாள் உண்ட நாம்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): nām aṉḏṟi nāḷ ēdu? nām nammai nāḍādu ‘nām uḍal’ eṉḏṟu eṇṇil, namai nāḷ uṇṇum. nām uḍambō? nām iṉḏṟu, seṉḏṟa, varu nāḷ eṉḏṟum oṉḏṟu. adaṉāl nām uṇḍu, nāḷ uṇḍa nām.

English translation: Except we [as the one infinite and immutable being-awareness (sat-cit) that we actually are], where is time? [That is, there is no time but only we.] If, [because of] not investigating ourself, we think that we are a body, time [in the form of death] will swallow us. [But] are we a body? Now [and in every] past and future time, always we are [the same] one [namely pure being-awareness, the only one thing that endures forever and never changes]. Therefore there is [only] we, we who [by knowing and being the one infinite being-awareness that we always actually are] have swallowed time.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 15:

ஆன்மாவா யீசனுள னால்.

āṉmānu sandhāṉa maḵdupara mīśabhatti

பதச்சேதம்: ஆன்ம அநுசந்தானம் அஃது பரம் ஈச பத்தி, ஆன்மாவாய் ஈசன் உளனால்.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): āṉma-anusandhāṉam-aḵdu param īśa-bhatti, āṉmā-v-āy īśaṉ uḷaṉāl..

English translation: Ātma-anusaṁdhāna [self-investigation] is [supreme] bhakti [devotion] to God, the ultimate [reality], because God is ātman [oneself, in the sense of ourself as we actually are].

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 16:

பதச்சேதம்: நனவில் சுழுத்தி நடை என்றும் தன்னை வினவும் உசாவால் விளையும். நனவில் கனவில் சுழுத்தி கலந்து ஒளிரும் காறும், அனவரதம் அவ் உசா ஆற்று.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): naṉavil suṙutti naḍai eṉḏṟum taṉṉai viṉavum usāvāl viḷaiyum. naṉavil kaṉavil suṙutti kalandu oḷirum kāṟum, aṉavaratam a-vv-usā āṯṟu.

English translation: The state of sleep in waking [known in Sanskrit as jāgrat-suṣupti, ‘wakeful sleep’, namely our natural state of pure being-awareness (sat-cit), in which we are awake to svarūpa (our own essential nature or reality) but asleep to the illusory appearance of all other things] will result by subtle investigation, in which one always examines [or keenly attends to] oneself. Until sleep shines blending [or pervading] in waking and in dream, do that subtle investigation incessantly.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 19:

சாந்தியதே யுண்ணோக்கிற் சத்தி புறநோக்கால்
ஆய்ந்தறிவார்க் கொன்றா மவை.

பதச்சேதம்: சாந்தி அதே உள் நோக்கில் சத்தி புற நோக்கால். ஆய்ந்து அறிவார்க்கு ஒன்று ஆம் அவை.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): śānti-adē uḷ-nōkkil śatti puṟa-nōkkāl. āyndu aṟivārkku oṉḏṟu ām avai.

English translation: That very peace [of pure being that is experienced] in inward look [when looking inside] is [what is experienced as] power by outward look [when looking outside]. To [or for] those who, having investigated [themself], know [what alone is real, transcending all distinctions such as inside and outside], they [peace and power] are one.

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 26:

பதச்சேதம்: அக்கரம் அது ஓர் எழுத்து ஆகும். இப் புத்தகத்து ஓர் அக்கரம் ஆம் அஃது எழுத ஆசித்தாய். அக்கரம் ஆம் ஓர் எழுத்து என்றும் தானாய் உள்ளத்து ஒளிர்வது ஆம். ஆர் எழுத வல்லார் அதை?

Padacchēdam (word-separation): akkaram-adu ōr eṙuttu āhum. i-p-puttakattu ōr akkaram ām aḵdu eṙuda āśittāy. akkaram ām ōr eṙuttu eṉḏṟum tāṉāy uḷḷattu oḷirvadu ām. ār eṙuda vallār adai?

English translation: That, the akṣara [the imperishable, namely brahman, the one infinite reality], is the one [unique and peerless] letter. You wanted [me] to write that, which is the one [unique and peerless] akṣara [letter, syllable or imperishable reality], in this book. One letter [namely infinite silence], which is akṣara [imperishable and immutable], is what always shines spontaneously [or as oneself] in the heart [as sat-cit, pure being-awareness, ‘I am’]. Who are those who are able to write it?

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 26 (Sanskrit version):

एकमक्षरं हृदि निरन्तरं ।

पदच्छेद: एकम् अक्षरम् हृदि निरन्तरम् भासते स्वयम्. लिख्यते कथम्?

Padacchēda (word-separation): ēkam akṣaram hṛdi nirantaram bhāsatē svayam. likhyatē katham?

English translation: One akṣara [syllable or imperishable thing] unceasingly shines spontaneously in the heart. How [is it] to be written?

Upadēśa Taṉippākkaḷ verse 27:

பதச்சேதம்: மௌனம் உள் எழும் ஒரு மொழி அருள் நிலையே.

Padacchēdam (word-separation): mauṉam uḷ eṙum oru moṙi aruḷ-nilaiyē.

English translation: Silence is the very nature [or actual state] of grace, the one [unique and peerless] language that rises within [eternally surging forth as the clear light of pure awareness, ‘I am’, drawing the mind back within and waiting to swallow it as soon as it thereby sinks deep enough into the heart].

Nāṉ Ār? (Who am I?)

Nāṉ Ār? paragraph 1:

Since all sentient beings like [love or want] to be always happy without what is called misery, since for everyone the greatest love is only for oneself, and since happiness alone is the cause for love, [in order] to obtain that happiness, which is one’s svabhāva [own being, existence or nature], which one experiences daily in [dreamless] sleep, which is devoid of mind, oneself knowing oneself is necessary. For that, jñāna-vicāra [awareness-investigation] called ‘who am I’ alone is the principal means.

Nāṉ Ār? paragraph 7:

யதார்த்தமா யுள்ளது ஆத்மசொரூப மொன்றே. ஜக ஜீவ ஈச்வரர்கள், சிப்பியில் வெள்ளிபோல் அதிற் கற்பனைகள். இவை மூன்றும் ஏககாலத்தில் தோன்றி ஏககாலத்தில் மறைகின்றன. சொரூபமே ஜகம்; சொரூபமே நான்; சொரூபமே ஈச்வரன்; எல்லாம் சிவ சொரூபமாம்.

What actually exists is only ātma-svarūpa [the ‘own form’ or real nature of oneself, namely ourself as we actually are]. The world, soul and God are kalpanaigaḷ [fabrications or illusory superimpositions] in it, like the [illusory] silver in a shell. These three appear simultaneously and disappear simultaneously. Svarūpa [ourself as we actually are] alone is the world; svarūpa alone is ‘I’ [ego or soul]; svarūpa alone is God; everything is śiva-svarūpa [svarūpa, which is śiva, the one infinite whole].

Even though viṣaya-vāsanās [inclinations to experience things other than oneself], which come from time immemorial, rise in countless numbers like ocean-waves, they will all be destroyed when svarūpa-dhyāna [self-attentiveness, contemplation on svarūpa (one’s own being)] increases and increases [in depth and intensity]. Without giving room even to the doubting thought ‘So many vāsanās ceasing [or being dissolved], is it possible to be only as svarūpa?’ it is necessary to cling tenaciously to svarūpa-dhyāna. However great a sinner one may be, if instead of lamenting and weeping ‘I am a sinner! How am I going to be saved?’ one completely rejects the thought that one is a sinner and is zealous [or steadfast] in svarūpa-dhyāna, one will certainly be reformed [transformed from rising as ego to being as svarūpa].

As long as viṣaya-vāsanās exist within the mind, so long is the investigation who am I necessary. As and when thoughts appear, then and there it is necessary to annihilate them all by vicāraṇā [investigation or keen self-attentiveness] in the very place from which they arise. Not attending to anything other [than oneself] is vairāgya [dispassion or detachment] or nirāśā [desirelessness]; not leaving [or letting go of] oneself is jñāna [true knowledge or real awareness]. In truth [these] two [vairāgya and jñāna] are just one. Just as pearl-divers, tying stones to their waists and sinking, pick up pearls that are found at the bottom of the ocean, so each one, sinking deep within oneself with vairāgya [freedom from desire to be aware of anything other than oneself], may obtain ātma-muttu [the self-pearl, meaning the pearl that is one’s own real nature]. If one clings fast to uninterrupted svarūpa-smaraṇa [remembrance of svarūpa, one’s own being] until one attains svarūpa, that alone is sufficient. So long as enemies [namely viṣaya-vāsanās] are within the fortress [namely one’s heart], they will be continuously coming out from it. If one is continuously cutting down [or destroying] all of them as and when they come, the fortress will [eventually] be captured.

Nāṉ Ār? paragraph 12:

Even though one places whatever amount of burden upon God, that entire amount he will bear. Since one paramēśvara śakti [supreme ruling power or power of God] is driving all kāryas [whatever needs or ought to be done or to happen], instead of we also yielding to it, why to be perpetually thinking, ‘it is necessary to do like this; it is necessary to do like that’? Though we know that the train is going bearing all the burdens, why should we who go travelling in it, instead of remaining happily leaving our small luggage placed on it [the train], suffer bearing it [our luggage] on our head?

The note that Bhagavan wrote for his mother in December 1898

அவரவர் பிராரப்தப் பிரகாரம் அதற்கானவன் ஆங்காங்கிருந் தாட்டுவிப்பன். என்றும் நடவாதது என் முயற்சிக்கினும் நடவாது; நடப்ப தென்றடை செய்யினும் நில்லாது. இதுவே திண்ணம். ஆகலின் மௌனமா யிருக்கை நன்று.

In accordance with their-their prārabdha, he who is for that being there-there will cause to dance [that is, in accordance with the destiny (prārabdha) of each individual, he who is for that (namely God or guru, who ordains their destiny) being in the heart of each of them will make them act]. What will never happen will not happen whatever effort one makes [to make it happen]; what will happen will not stop whatever obstruction [or resistance] one does [to prevent it happening]. This indeed is certain. Therefore silently being [or being silent] is good.

2. About this book

When I arrived in Tiruvannamalai in September 1976 I knew very little about Bhagavan Sri Ramana or his teachings, but I had come there because I was curious to know more. The first work I read soon after arriving was an English translation of the question and answer version of Nāṉ Ār? (Who am I?), and as soon as I read it I recognised that his teachings were exactly what I had been looking for, because it made so much sense to me that we cannot be sure about anything else that we may know if we do not even know what we ourself actually are, so I eagerly began to read other books on his teachings.

Having understood that the aim was for us to know what we actually are and that the means was ‘self-enquiry’ (ātma-vicāra), my first priority was to be sure that I had understood what the practice of ātma-vicāra actually is. I had vaguely understood it, but I wanted to understand it more clearly. However, in none of the English books that were then available in Sri Ramanasramam did I find the clarity I was seeking, but fortunately soon after my quest for clarity began I heard about Sri Sadhu Om and his book The Path of Sri Ramana, which I was told was the clearest available explanation of Bhagavan’s teachings in general and the practice of ātma-vicāra in particular, and when I read it I discovered for myself how much clarity it contained.

I found even greater clarity when talking with Sadhu Om, and whatever questions I asked him, his replies always helped to deepen and clarify my understanding. One thing he often emphasised when replying to my questions was the importance of carefully studying and understanding Bhagavan’s own original writings, but in those days most of the English translations of them that had been published were not sufficiently accurate or clear, as I discovered by comparing those translations with the much more accurate ones that Sadhu Om had made with the help of various friends.

Another work whose importance he often emphasised was Guru Vācaka Kōvai, so since the only translation of it that was then available was one by Prof. K. Swaminathan that was being serialised in The Mountain Path, a quarterly journal published by Sri Ramanasramam, I began to read it, and wherever the meaning of any verse did not seem suffiently clear to me, I would ask Sadhu Om for clarification. Since it was clear that many of the translations were not sufficiently accurate, he suggested to me one day that we should begin to make a fresh translation, so from that day onwards we would spend a few hours each morning translating and discussing verses from it. He would write a rough translation of each verse on a slate, I would then question him about it, and once I was satisfied that I had understood it, I would polish his translation and show my version to him for his approval. This work gave me an opportunity not only to study Bhagavan’s teachings deeply but also to begin learning Tamil, and at the same time we also began to revise his translations of Bhagavan’s own original writings together, so over the course of the next eight years we translated Guru Vācaka Kōvai, most of Bhagavan’s original writings, Sādhanai Sāram, other verses and songs and some portions of The Path of Sri Ramana.

While we were revising his translations of Bhagavan’s writings, I suggested to Sadhu Om that whenever we had revised them to our satisfaction, we should publish them all as a book under the title The Original Writings of Bhagavan Ramana, and he agreed that this would be a suitable title. It is now nearly fifty years since I first suggested this title, and since then by Bhagavan’s grace I have been repeatedly refining these translations as my understanding both of his teachings and of the Tamil in which he expressed them has been gradually growing deeper and clearer, and as I have also been honing my ability to articulate them clearly and accurately in English.

There is no such thing as a perfect translation, so there will always be scope for improvement, and hence I will no doubt continue to refine these translations for as long as this body survives or at least so long as Bhagavan gives me the strength and ability to do so. Others may be satisfied with my translations, but for me they will always be a work in progress. Left to my own devises, therefore, I would probably never have got round to publishing these translations as a book, so they would have been available only here on my website and blog, but knowing this, Kumar Saran took the initiative to compile this book with all the latest iterations of my translations, and I asked him to give it the title I had originally suggested: The Original Writings of Bhagavan Ramana.
